Since the Kings of Slash supergroup was announced, much has been said about the pros, cons, and possibilities of Megadeth mastermind Dave Mustaine playing with them. That’s unlikely, of course, but at least guitarist Chris Poland is on board with the idea.
Poland, who was on and off with Megadeth from 1984 to 2004, discussed the project with the rock music star earlier this month. When asked if he would ever “allow” Mustaine to jam with Kings of Thrash, Poland responded with an energetic and enthusiastic response. According to the transcription by Blavermouth:
Damn, I would. yeah, i will. are you kidding? I mean, please, that would be pretty cool. But Dave is probably more like Miles Davis. Miles Davis never looked back. he was just looking forward to it. I know he’s playing certain songs on certain records, but he doesn’t want to go that far. And that would be a lot for him to learn. But I think he wrote it. He could probably play it in like five minutes.
Unsurprisingly, Kings of Thrash’s upcoming “Thrashing USA” tour will feature Poland, former bassist David Ellefson, former guitarist Jeff Young, vocalist Chaz Leon and drummer Fred Assing. It alludes to the fact that they play songs from the 1985s. Murder is my business…and business is good! and 1988 so far so good…so what! Overall.
He also praised Young and Leon’s ability to replicate Mustaine’s unique talents.
But I want to say Jeff Young… oh my god. I knew Jeff Young was a great guitarist, but doing shows with him gave him a whole new respect for his playing. Because he nailed Dave, nailed himself, and just rocked while doing it. He doesn’t take anything from Chaz. Chaz himself is a great guitarist and he can sing and play because he thought Dave could.
You can memorize the parts, but do you sing by remembering the parts while playing? When I was in the band, playing such a hard, hard song, I was wondering how Dave did it. And Chaz – no problem.Full participation [Kings of Thrash], it’s all for one and one for all. No ego anywhere. Everyone is like, “Let’s go.”
