As Loudwire previewed last month (January 5th), the Recording Academy’s Special Merit Awards ceremony took place last night (February 4th) at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles. Excitingly, the winners included Anne and Nancy Wilson from Nirvana and Hearts (as well as Nile Rodgers, Bobby McFerrin, The Supremes, Slick Rick and Ma Rainey).
As Billboard points out, the Lifetime Achievement Award is intended to be “a small, intimate event in which the Academy presents the Lifetime Achievement Award, Trustee Award, Technical Grammy Award, and Music Educator Award.” It’s also a place where you can “get a personal glimpse of the emerging artists.”
Similarly, Recording Academy Chief Awards and Industry Officer Ruby Marchand welcomed attendees and introduced the ceremony, adding:
Not surprisingly, Dave Grohl, Pat Smear, and Chris Novoselic were honored with Nirvana’s Lifetime Achievement Award. In his speech, Novoselic thought:

Meanwhile, Grohl quietly stood behind him.
As for Nancy Wilson, she reflected:

My dream was to become the Beatles. We’ve followed our muse for decades [and] We cleared some trails and broke some glass ceilings along the way, for both men and women. [To the] Recording Academy, thank you for your continued support. It would look great on grandma’s piano in her home studio.
Ann Wilson wasn’t there, so Hypnosis Songs founder Melk Mercuriadis accepted on her behalf. He recalled hearing his first hit, “Magic Man,” and said he’s been a fan of his ever since. said to be featured in
