‘They will take advantage of you’: Candi Staton advises aspiring musicians to hire a good lawyer


Candi Staton advises young musicians to find a good lawyer to avoid getting scammed.

The 82-year-old soul legend has yet to pay record labels back for his 1976 hit ‘Young Hurts Run Free’ when asked what lesson he wants to pass on to aspiring artists claimed.

In the latest issue of MOJO magazine, she said: Go to small print on page 3, 4, 5. They will take advantage of you, you will pay for every promotion, every party. Considering how many copies Young Hearts Run Free must have sold, it only paid Warners the full amount last year. ”

The “You’ve Got the Love” hitmaker previously recalled having to pull out his gun after a concert promoter refused to pay.

Meanwhile, Candy revealed that she is a huge fan of Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, and her mates the late Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight.

She said: “I love my dear [late] friend aretha [Franklin] and Gladys [Knight]I like Alicia Keys.Beyoncé’s ‘Irreplaceable’ is like a private life [laughs]. Teddy Pendergrass.Sarah Dash [from LaBelle] was one of my best friends. She would always call me if I was having my worst time. I spoke with her last month, and three days after that, I found out on her Instagram that she passed away. I called her number and her sister answered and confirmed so I just yelled. ”
