Angela Bassett and Beyoncé each won three awards and top individual awards at the 2023 NAACP Image Awards. Bassett won the highest award, Entertainer of the Year, and opened her speech at last weekend’s Brit Her Awards with a bit of fun with Ariana DeVose’s widely derided rap.
“I think Angela Bassett did it,” Bassett said with a laugh. Other nominees were Mary J. Blige, Quinta Branson, Viola Davis, and Zendaya.
Bassett also won the Outstanding Supporting Actress award for the film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and drama lead actress [TV] series 9-1-1 at FOX. The veteran actress is considered a frontrunner to win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress on March 12th. west side story.)
All three of Beyoncé’s categories were announced before Saturday, and she wasn’t appearing on the telecast.she has a great album renaissance (her third win in the category), Outstanding Soul/R&B Song for “Cuff It”, and Outstanding Female Artist (seventh win extending her record in the category).
Chris Brown, Brunson, Ryan Coogler, and Davis each won two awards. (Some shows have won awards as well, but this only counts awards given to individuals.)
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Like the original work, it won the Excellence Award black panther I did 4 years ago. It’s his second time in three years that a franchise film has won in this category. 2 years ago winner bad boys for lifethe third film in that franchise.
ABC’s Abbott Elementary School Award for Excellence in Comedy [TV] series. The show was nominated for Primetime His Emmy in the same category last year, but didn’t win, but it’s almost a foregone conclusion that it will win this year.
That’s not to say the 54th NAACP Image Awards, which were announced at last week’s nightly awards ceremony, weren’t without surprises. Well hosted by Queen Latifah, the show aired on BET and was simulcast on 12 Paramount his global networks including CBS, MTV, VH1 and CMT.
One of the biggest surprises was that Kendrick Lamar won nothing. The acclaimed rapper has received five nominations, tying Beyoncé for more nods than anyone in the music category. However, he was shut out when she won three awards this year.
Drake, another hip-hop superstar, went 0-3 this year.

Snub: Kendrick Lamar
Lamar lost Outstanding Male Artist (whom he has yet to win) to Chris Brown (who won for the third time).Also, Lamar topped Billboard 200 Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers lost an outstanding album renaissance“Die Hard” (featuring Blxt & Amanda Reifer) loses a good duo, group or collaboration (traditionally) compared to Silk Sonic’s “Love’s Train”. “The Heart Part 5” lost twice. We lost standout hip-hop/rap songs with Quavo and Takeoff’s “Hotel Lobby” and we lost an excellent music video/visual album with Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up.”

Surprise: Will Smith
It’s no surprise that Smith won Outstanding Actor in a Movie. releaseThis was his first nomination since last year’s Oscar telecast slap that tarnished his image and put his career in jeopardy. king richard, the role that earned him his first Oscar. Surprise: Coco Jones
Jones got a better new (recording) artist than Steve Lacy at ICU. gemini rights, among others. Lacy’s album won a Grammy Award for Best Progressive R&B Album and spawned the smash hit “Bad Habit” which topped her Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks.

Snub: ‘Wait for U’ by Future
Future’s hit song featuring Drake and Thames topped the Billboard Hot 100 and earned him a Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance. However, it fell short in both categories nominated here. Lost to Chris Brown featuring “Call Me Every Day”.

Surprise: Gina Prince-Bythewood
Prince-Bythewood won Best Director in the Motion Picture category. queen (Sony Pictures release).She beat out director Ryan Coogler Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, among others. This was Prince’s record-breaking third win in this category for his Visorwood, The secret life of bees (2009) and old guard (2021). Coogler has won twice in the following categories. Creed (2016) and black panther (2019). Coogler won two awards that night. A good script for the movie and a good soundtrack/compilation for his album. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Snub: Jerrod Carmichael
Jerrod Carmichael won his first Primetime Emmy Award in September for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special on the HBO Max Special. Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel, but he lost in the equal category (Outstanding Writing in a TV Movie or Special) here. Palmer won Outstanding Character Narration Performance – Movie. She beat out a pair of past Oscar nominees – Angela Bassett (nominee) Wendell & Wild) and Taraji P. Henson (nominated) Minions: Rise of Gru).

Ralph won her first Primetime Emmy Award in September. Abbott Elementary School, but lost to castmate Janelle James here. Both were vying for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. The two actresses received their first award in a telecast. Ralph warmly congratulated James on the previous night’s victory.

Surprise: Tabitha Brown
Host of tab time YouTube Originals has won the best individual or ensemble hosts in reality/reality contests, game shows, or variety (series or specials). (That category name is longer than the show!) Her victory was sweet as she went up against four major names – Lizzo’s Beware of Lizzo’s Big GrrrlsTrevor Noah Daily Show with Trevor NoahTaraji P. Guillermo del Toro’s films are frontrunners for the Best Animated Feature Oscar, but they lost out on outstanding animated film here. Wendell & WildThe latter film was not even nominated for an Oscar.

Surprise: Nico Annan
Starz’ star P Valley win the best actor in a drama [TV] Series, Beating, Sterling K. Brown on NBC’s Just Wrap, among others this is us (who has won twice in this category). Annan stars as Clifford her Uncle Sails, a non-binary owner and operator of a strip-her club called The Her Pink in the fictional city of Chucarissa. P Valley It also won Best Drama Series.

Image Awards voters seem to prefer the real Michelle Obama to the dramatized version.
