Their participation in the parade was canceled, presumably because of the rain that had fallen all day.

But inside, under the direction of director Joey Aguilar, three student bands played several seasons of music at the Bruin Gym on the RHS campus during a December 8 concert. The beginner band started the program with three songs, “Star Chase”, “Up on the Housetop” and “Jingle Bell Jam”.

Next, a jazz band took over arrangements of “Ye Jazzy Gentlemen” and “Sleigh Ride.” A jazz band is a new addition to the school’s music program this year, Aguilar said. Its members also played in the Advance Band.

The final section included “Tis the Season”, “Patapan” based on a French carol, and “A Christmas Tale (Beware of Krampus)”.

The story featured RHS drama teacher John Thiel as the narrator.

The jazz band was created by Aguilar during Bruin Time.

Aguilar explains: on a regular schedule. ”

The band now has 12 students and Aguilar hopes to grow further. He said they are all learning new styles of music well.

“The attendance was better than the last concert of 2019, but I think there could have been a larger audience,” Aguilar said of the Dec. 8 show. They were pretty nervous overall, but they played well and got their first real performance of the year.”

The evening ended with a performance of “Brazilian Sleigh Bells” by the senior band.
