The University of Kansas School of Music announced Wednesday that it has appointed Paul Popiel as interim dean.
According to the announcement, “Popiel joined the university in 2010 and has been a tenured professor and band director, bringing a wealth of experience to this role.” , making him a valuable asset to our community.”

In addition to his work with KU, Popiel conducts the Lawrence City Band.
“During my 13 years here, I have experienced first-hand the excellence and passion of the music community, and I am thrilled to step into a new role that will continue the development of the KU School of Music,” Popiel said in a statement. I said inside. “I look forward to working with our administrators, faculty, and students to improve our programs and share our talents to improve the quality of life for people on campus, across the state, and around the world.”
Prior to coming to KU, Popiel held appointments at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Oklahoma State University, and public schools in Texas and Michigan, according to the announcement. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Truman State University, a Master of Music in Music from the University of Notre Dame, and a PhD in Musical Arts from Michigan State University.

Fary Afani, a spokesperson for the school of music, said it did not yet have information on how and when a permanent dean would be chosen.
