Dothan, Alabama (WTVY) – Charlie Monk, a renowned disc jockey, songwriter and businessman from Geneva, has died.
According to multiple reports, Monk died at his home in Nashville on Monday. he was 84 years old.
His career began at a small radio station in Geneva, then flew across Alabama and finally landed in Tennessee, where he was most successful.
Monk launched a country music business, became a popular radio personality, and was a regular at the Grand Ole Opry.
He was so influential that he was called “Mayor of Music Row” in tribute to Monk’s influence on the industry.
He gave early career exposure to recording artists, including Kenny Chesney, and is credited with writing several songs recorded by artists like Eddie Arnold.
Although he has received numerous industry achievement awards, Monk is best known for his warm and loyal personality.
“He always has a big smile on his face and has done a lot for country music. I love him to pieces! According to Tennessee, Reba McEntire said of Monk.
Most recently, SiriusXM played some country music classics at Willie’s Roadhouse.
In Geneva, Monk attended school with Ann Varnum. Ann Varnum has also become an icon during her long and charismatic WTVY career.
She passed away in 2020.
