David Lee Roth and his Van Halen bandmates called him Eddie Van Halen what? In fact, the influential hard rock quartet had a personal nickname for Van Halen’s guitarist.
in the Ross episode Ross Shaw On the podcast, the former Van Halen singer kept everything in the family and recalled when his grandmother first came to a Van Halen show, but left early. Rocker later reflected on the family nickname he and the group reserved for Eddie, the iconic Van Halen frontman who died in 2020 at the age of 65.

he recalls. They bought her new shoes—I think they were Nike tennis shoes. It was several sizes too big for her.
Ross’ grandma left the Van Halen show early
But Ross’ grandmother eventually walked away “mid the show,” the singer remembers.
She “demanded to leave because I thought the volume would tear her bones apart,” he adds. [said] Hello — “Oh I love you darling. I love you darling. She was like Aunt Em wizard of oz — “Oh, I love you, darling.” pinched my face and everything.
the singer continues. at the end of the night— oh she [thought] Volume was going to tear her bones apart. So she took off. ”
Eddie Van Halen’s nickname in Van Halen
After a Van Halen concert in Miami, the band was “postponed to the Holiday Inn,” Ross remembers.
“Before that, I sent a security guard,” he explained, before sharing the nickname the group used affectionately for Eddie. It distinguished the guitarist from a security guard named Ed.
“We didn’t call Eddie Van Halen ‘Eddie,’ we called him ‘Vard,'” Ross says. “That’s because his mother used the Dutch expression” for the Dutch-born guitarist’s name.
He adds: Edward! Edward! And we call him Vard. My security guard’s name was Ed and we used to call him “Big” Ed. ”
