Barton Music Department to present string masterclass and concert featuring the Jopara Ensemble


The Barton Music Department will host the “Jopara Ensemble” as part of an evening of Paraguayan music on Saturday, February 4th. Masterclass at 4:00 PM in the Chapel and concert at 7:30 PM in the Fine Arts Auditorium. at Burton Community College. The event is free and open to the public and is fully sponsored by the Burton Foundation.

String Area faculty from Emporia State University and Washburn College will lead attendees through an evening of music and culture. The masterclass portion will feature guest musicians as well as Burton students and community members. The evening will culminate in a concert featuring collaborations between Barton’s Keyboard Instructor and Accompaniment Director Dr. Alejandro Avila and his musicians on a variety of instrumental combinations featuring Paraguayan music.

Avila said attendees will learn about string techniques and musical elements during the masterclass portion, where students and community members will perform pieces and get feedback from guest artists.

“This event was designed as a way for everyone to be aware of and enjoy Paraguayan music in original arrangements by the musicians of the Jopara Ensemble, transcending the boundaries of musical genres, but with the participation of guest musicians and You can benefit from that expertise, and in terms of education as well,” he said.
