In August 2021, Apple announced the acquisition of classical music service Primephonic, promising “the famous classical music experience is coming to Apple Music.” Apple promised his Primephonic exclusive content and playlists within Apple Music, as well as an “exclusive experience” coming “in the coming months.”
The first part of that promise has come true – Apple Music has a Primephonic category (admittedly under-hyped) and some nice playlists. And of course, Apple Music has its own Classics section. Yes, and they have a nice catalog of spatial audio tracks, but they’re also poorly advertised. However, the second part, which many speculated would come as a separate app, has yet to debut.
Admittedly, Apple didn’t buy Primephonic. this, correct? Both qualify as “Exclusive Experience” subscribers, which should offer “better browsing and searching capabilities by composer and by repertoire, detailed viewing of classical music metadata, and new features and benefits.” Far from it. What we have now is exactly the same as all genres within Apple Music.
The Primephonic site has not been updated since the acquisition. It still contains only a statement about Primephonic’s closure and the promise of “amazing new classical music experiences from Apple next year.” That’s the year, and it’s coming to an end.
Back in September, a little reference code (Posted by @aaronp613 on Twitter) seemed to imply that Apple was connecting Apple Music Classical to a backend music server. It’s odd that it’s taken over a year, but let’s assume it was. Now he is 3 months old. Since then iOS 16, 16.1 and now he 16.2 have been released.
Fans of Primephonic and those looking forward to Apple Music Classical have three possibilities.
First, Apple may still be on track. The company delivered some apps through the App Store rather than as part of an OS update. Shazam, another company acquired by Apple, is still a downloaded app. It may be a Christmas surprise, but is it launching on the App Store now?
Second, Apple has completely abandoned the whole “exclusive experience” idea. What you see is what you get. Primephonic is the curator of Apple Music and the app has a Classics section. Don’t expect more.certainly don’t expect another product Named Apple Music Classic.
Or the third is that Apple is behind. The promised 2022 release comes and goes, and Apple plans to launch something in 2023. Perhaps as part of iOS 16.3, or during the Spring event in March?
Of these three, I think the third is more likely. Something called Apple Music Classical will be released in 2023. It could be a standalone app or a robust section within Apple Music, with its own interface and navigation changes. But there is frustratingly little evidence to support this. It’s just an intuition based on the idea that Apple rarely makes such public purchases. many It’s more than what we did with Primephonic.
